Robert Hart, P.E., Director of Engineering and manager of the Arkansas drinking water program at the Department of Health, thinks that state regulations should be beefed up to require backup power as part of each water utility's emergency plan. His comments come on the heels of an ice storm that hit North Central Arkansas last week. Power outages resulted in a losses of pressure, followed by precautionary Boil Water Orders.
According to Hart's response to my inquiry, as of this morning, 78 boil water advisories have been issued for all or part of water systems serving a total of 134,000 persons. Approximately 60 advisories remain in effect today.
